Find Your Perfect Face Serum

Do you have wrinkles, acne, skin spots or have dullness to your skin? The greatest product for this multitude of skin issues is serum. According to Dr. Dendy Engelman, "Serums are the most potent type of skincare-they're concentrated and contain the greatest amount of active ingredients. They bring about the most change in your skin. They're made up of small molecules, which allows them to penetrate deeply into the pores for increased efficacy."

If you’ve ever relied on a cream moisturizer, you’ll understand that the thicker texture does not easily penetrate the outer layer of skin. So, start with a freshly cleansed face, and then apply serum. Most dermatologists recommend going in this order: 1) cleansing, toning or exfoliating, 2) applying serum, 3) using moisturizer, and 4) then using sunscreen. Because most products are made to layer, you don’t have to really wait between steps.

If your skin feels too heavy with all of this, I recommend a lighter moisturizer and then wearing a makeup base that includes sunscreen.

I have found that not only do my favorite serums reverse skin issues like those mentioned above, they also work to prevent future issues.

Often I’m asked what kind of serum to use. Here’s what I find works best. In the morning, I apply my antioxidant-based serum to protect my skin from UV rays and pollution. In the evening, I use a serum to target whatever is going on with my skin. Keep these in mind as you make your selection:

  • Retinol-based serums work on issues like blemishes, aging and blotchy skin.

  • Alpha hydroxy acid serums work on pigmentation problems.

  • Salicylic acid serums help with acne by gently exfoliating, clearing the pores and calming the skin to reduce oil production.
