Have you ever really thought about what motivates you to do things?
It's easier to just get up and do what you do every day without giving it much thought. But about in early 2019 a traumatic injury changed that for me. I had to work really hard to get my mobility back; but even harder was working to get my "me" back.
That involved me thinking about who I really am. Who and what is important to me? Who and what matters to me? What makes me unique? When do I have the most energy? What natural gifts do I possess?
The answer to all of those questions came out like this: my family, my friends, making a difference to other people, my quick wit, when I have the chance to help someone solve a problem, and I am an extroverted introvert.
I went to college to become an elementary school teacher but found that other people's children were not all sweet and nice. So I went back to what I did to make money while going to school and become a career banker. Most of my banking career centered around coaching, training and mentoring people. Helping them find their best selves really made me happy. I did the same thing in my personal life.
When banking made a change to push sales, I nearly left the field. But instead I changed what I was doing within the banking world, and I moved to a bank that put the customer's needs first. I found quickly that the best salespeople in the world don't push products. They solve problems. When you help someone solve a problem with a caring attitude, you build a relationship. Everyone wins, and everyone feels great.
Fast forward all these years later, post traumatic injury, and I realized that I was naturally drawn to solving problems in people's personal lives. They often came to me for suggestions and advice on topics where I made myself an expert.
